Human
beings are capable of living longer and healthier lives if they can
avoid bad thoughts. Negative thoughts drain your energy and bring
unhappiness. They are characterized by worry and fear. They create
anxiety and render you helpless.
Our
physical bodies are in constant interactions with the outside world.
When we pick up something from the environment in which we live,
through observation or touch, our internal mechanisms process this
information. This information is referred to as sensory input. It is
converted into nerve impulses that are sent to the brain for
translation. Our brains then create a mental picture of the
environment. This way, we become aware of the environment and the
changes therein.
When we become aware of our surroundings, we in turn create solutions. We classify things as good or bad, pleasant or annoying, dreadful or friendly and so on. The molecules that make up our body masses have a coordinated working relationship. The co-ordination is responsible for how our bodies react to the classifications above. These coordinated reactions ignite the daily activities in our bodies; from digestion to blood circulation. In simpler terms, we can say that the body is facing up to the daily external challenges. Thoughts are mainly imaginations. If we imagine that a situation is threatening or dangerous, the heart beats faster, breathing becomes rapid and at this moment, the general metabolism is quicker. The body produces energy which strengthens our bodies and gets us ready to face the challenging situation.
This is how the body reacts even when the thoughts are not real. For, instance if a person is worried about his finances and/or family life, a signal is sent to the brain and the brain interprets this to mean that the person is in danger. The body’s reaction to this situation is somewhat similar to when a person bumps into a snake in a thicket.
However, in the first instance, the body’s response is slower since the brain does not send a message of urgency. When it comes to dealing with the two solutions, the body does not use up a lot of the energy although the energy has already been produced to deal with the situation. Even more interesting is that the person is ‘just’ worried and he/she could even be lying on a bed at the time.
Therefore, the energy produced to help the worried person deal with his situation becomes waste and hence toxic. It interferes with the co-coordinated functioning of the body. This is the advent of sickness.
Disease is simply the result of having dysfunctional body functions. When the uncoordinated body functions reach an advanced stage, one’s health deteriorates and eventually leads to death.

It
is no wonder that the bible advises those who want to live longer, to
always be happy. Unhappiness wears and tears our bodies. This is
because we use up more energy moaning about our troubles than when we
are free from our daily stresses and pains. But this is not the only
reason why bad thoughts undermine our health. Indeed there is a
scientific twist to this but that's a topic for another time.
